Gracie Irene Edwards Whitaker

Mrs. Gracie Irene Edwards Whitaker, age 87, of Mt. Airy, passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Whitaker was born in Surry County on September 3, 1928, to the late James Hardin and Flora Ella Upchurch Edwards. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who will be dearly missed by all her family and many friends. Mrs. Whitaker retired from Spencer’s and attended Faith Baptist Church where she loved to worship her lord and savior Jesus Christ. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Claude Allen Whitaker; daughter, Claudine Simmons; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; a half brother and sister-in-law, John and Lula Edwards. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Whitaker was preceded in death by a son, Gary Whitaker; a daughter, Patricia Cifuentes; two grandchildren, Lana Barr, and Travis Whitaker; a son-in-law, Johnny Simmons; sisters, Maude and Dora Mae; brothers, Claude, Warren, and Irving Edwards. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Edwards and the Rev. Butch Holder officiating. Burial will follow in Edwards-Upchurch Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy.
