Mr. Graham Smith Lawrence, 87, devoted husband of Mrs. Mondell Golding Lawrence, of Dobson, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday September 5, 2008 while surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Surry County on July 9, 1921 to the late Henry Clay Lawrence III and Mae Smith Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence was a retired Superintendent of Surry Community College and a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served our country in Europe during WWII. A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, he leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Mondell Golding Lawrence of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Maynard McMillian of Greensboro and Cynthia and Steffen Haynes of Dobson; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Linda Lawrence of Dahlonega, GA.; grandchildren, Brad McMillian, Scott McMillian, Adam Haynes, Sally Haynes, John Lawrence, Jr., Mills Garwood, Sara Tyas; great grandchildren Austin Haynes, Ashlyn Haynes and Clay Tyas; sisters and brothers-in-law Lois Brown of Mt. Airy, Juanita Thompson of Longwood, FL., Dorothy and Ray Bowman of Dobson and Betty and Bobby Adams of Elkin; brother and sister-in-law Gray and Opal Lawrence of Mt. Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lawrence was preceded in death by his first wife Elizabeth Bryant Lawrence; sisters, Flossie Jewell Snow and Mary Helen Outlaw; brothers, Dorsey Lawrence and Davis Lawrence. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday September 8, 2008 at New Hope Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the Church Cemetery with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. Rev. Trent Lyons will officiate the services. The family will receive friends at New Hope Baptist Church on Sunday evening from 6 until 8 PM. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care 401 Technology Lane Suite 200, Mt. Airy NC 27030 or to New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery Fund PO Box 955, Dobson, NC 27017. The family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Nelson Gardner, Deloris Johnson, Crystal Peele and Deborah Maddy for the love and care given to their love one.
