Mr. Greer Oliver Atkins, 94, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, February 8, 2022, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson surrounded by his family. He was born in Surry County on February 22, 1927, to the late William Oliver Atkins and Zita Flora Watson Atkins. Greer was retired from the Newport News Shipyard as a painter and later moved to Mount Airy and was a self-employed painter. He proudly served our country in the US Army at the end of WWII. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Ruth L. Hooper Atkins; daughters, Flora Jan Atkins, and Karen Atkins Noonkester; son, William Scott Atkins; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; a special friend, Bruce Arnold; and his furry partner in crime, Roosevelt. In addition to his parents, Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Minnie Doris Creed Atkins; his second wife, Faye Irene Johnson Marion Atkins; a daughter, Ann Hinkle; a son, Stephen Greer Atkins; a grandson, Thomas Moran; four sisters, Beulah Beatrice Atkins Jones, Violet Atkins Butner, Ila Atkins, and Anna Lay Atkins; and by four brothers, Wade Arvil Atkins, Claude Emeral Atkins, Lavern Atkins and Calvin Ray Atkins. Funeral services for Mr. Atkins will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022, at 2:00PM at Little Mountain Baptist Church with the Reverend Bill Watson and Brother Ralph Sproles officiating. Burial will follow in the Little Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors by the Pilot Mountain Post 9436 and the Mount Airy Post 2019. The family will receive friends on Friday at the church from 1:00 until 2:00PM. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the Atkins family.
