Grover Walter Haymore

Mr. Grover Walter Haymore, 94, of Mount Airy, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 21, 2021, at his home. Mr. Haymore was born January 27, 1927, in Surry County, one of six children born to the late William Edgar and Lucy Frances Draughn Haymore. Grover served our country in the United States Army during World War II. On November 10, 1945, Grover married Oleen Faye Scott, and together they were a vital part of the Piney Grove community for many years. Mr. Haymore was self-employed for most of his adult life. He worked as a general contractor for years and later as a clothier, owning and operating Scenic Outlet until his retirement. He was a longtime and faithful member and deacon of Piney Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Bonnie Haymore, Clyde and Sheri Haymore, and Bill and Teresa Haymore, all of Mount Airy; his grandchildren, Ryan Haymore of Apex, Patrick and Sarah Haymore of Hickory, Carrie Wren, Lance and Julie Haymore, and Luke Haymore, all of Charlotte, and Kaylin and Jack Davis of Ararat; three great-grandchildren, Ella Haymore of Charlotte, Sophia Haymore of Hickory, and James Davis of Ararat; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Haymore was preceded in death by his wife, Oleen Faye Scott Haymore; three sisters, Lillian Simpson, Callie Atkins, and Margie Hiatt; and two brothers, Sam Haymore and Ellis “Buddy” Haymore. A service of worship and celebration of Grover’s life will be held Friday, July 23, 2021, at 1:00 PM at Piney Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Marcus E. McGill officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with full military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. Family and friends may pay their respects on Friday from 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM at the church (278 Piney Grove Road, Mount Airy).
