Mr. Hampton Harding Hutchens, 86, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at Golden Living Center. Mr. Hutchens was born December 17, 1921, in Amelia County, VA, to the late John C. and Mary Lawrence Hutchens. Hampton became disabled in 1944 while serving in the United States Army during World War II. Following his medical discharge, he lived his life being cared for by his devoted family. He is survived by a brother, Johnny Hutchens of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hutchens was preceded in death by four sisters, Eva Jane Hutchens, Iva Dell Griffith, Mary Ruth Fleischer, and Gladys Hazel "Mick" Snow; and three brothers, Marvin Hutchens, Bob Hutchens, and Herbert Hutchens. A graveside service will be held Saturday, February 9, 2008, at 2:00 PM at Hutchens-Venable Cemetery. No formal visitation will be held at the funeral home. Mr. Hutchens' niece and guardian, Shirley Snow, would like to express her heartfelt gratitude to Dave Irby of the Disabled American Veterans, Johnny Payne of Bank of America, the staff of Golden Living Center, and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for their great care, concern, and kindness shown to Hampton during his illness.
