Mr. Harold Lawrence Hawks, 84, of 239 Lyons Hollow Road, Lambsburg, VA, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2006, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, VA. Mr. Hawks was born November 27, 1921, in Carroll County, VA, to the late Hugh Jerome Hawks and Zula Faulkner Hawks Stone. Prior to serving in the United States Army during World War II, Harold was a member of CCC. While serving in the camps, he helped build Fairy Stone State Park near Stuart, VA. He was a retired supervisor from C and D Batteries in Richmond, VA. Throughout the years, Harold was a member of the Grover King VFW Post 1115 in Hillsville, VA, a member and volunteer of the Cana Golden Agers in Cana, VA, a volunteer at New River Trail State Park, and a member of the Carroll County Historical Society. While living in the Lambsburg community, Harold designed the earth-sheltered home that he and his wife, Joy, lived in for many years. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and Bruce James of Hickory; three grandchildren and spouses, Robert Bruce James of Roanoke, VA, Rebecca J. and Shane Ceraul of Baltimore, MD, and George Bradley and Paola Boyd of Richmond, VA; two great granddaughters, Rachel Lynn Boyd of Richmond, VA, and Lily Joy Ceraul of Baltimore, MD; a sister, Audrey Hawks Howard of Bee Branch, AR; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Dale and Frances Hawks of Lambsburg, VA, and Kenneth Hawks of Hampton, VA. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hawks was preceded in death by his wife, Joy Worrell Hawks; a daughter, Rachel Hawks Boyd; and a brother, Beryl Nelson Hawks. A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 20, 2006, at 3:00 PM at Lambsburg Christian Church. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Ron Schwartz. The family will greet friends at any time at the Hawks home in Lambsburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lambsburg Rescue Squad, 75 Goat House Road, Lambsburg, VA 24351, or to Cana Golden Agers, c/o Betty Gentry, 250 Oak Hill Drive, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
