Harold F. (Harry) Layman of Mt. Airy, NC, formerly of Lake Waccamaw, NC, passed away on Sunday, March 20. 2022 at Village Care of King, NC.  He was born May 27, 1927, in Haines Falls, NY and graduated high school in 1947 after serving his country proudly during World War II with a two-year stint in the U.S. Navy.  He graduated from NC State University in 1953 with a degree in Forest Management.  His 35-year career as an industrial forester culminated with his appointment by North Carolina’s Governor to the position of State Forester.  After six years he retired from this position and began writing his historical novel,
“The Over Winterers”.  He was a member of Grace Moravian Church where he sang in the choir and was a member of the John Walker Sunday School Class.  Surviving is his wife, Joan Layman of Mt. Airy, NC; sons, Matt (Kim) Layman of Belmont, NC, Mark Layman of Palm Desert, CA, Paul (Robin) Layman of Rutherfordton, NC; stepdaughter, Cathy (Dave) Lusk of Ararat, VA; sister-in-law, Barbara (Bill) Morrison of Lake Waccamaw, NC; his first wife, Sara Layman of Cramerton, NC; nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; and special family friend, Vicky (Dwayne) Bowman of Ararat, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Lula Alten Layman; sisters, Edna Morrisette and Millie Walsh; a brother, Doug Layman and his beloved fur companions, Katie and Molly.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 24, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Grace Moravian Church with visitation from 1:30 until 2:00 PM.  Burial will be private with military honors conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mt. Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Yokefellow Food Pantry, 215 Jones School Rd., Mt.
