Harrell Ray Smith

Mr. Harrell Ray Smith, 63, of 370 Piney Grove Road, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2007, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Mr. Smith was born September 5, 1943, in Surry County, to the Rev. Carnell Windell and Bertie Mae Atkins Smith. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and the co-owner and operator of Smith Brothers Sock Company. He is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ann and Bill Smith of Elkin and Janet Smith Sawyers of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronda and Ruby Smith of Stokesdale; several nieces and nephews; an uncle and spouse, D.J. and Louise Smith of Dobson; and many special friends. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a son, Marty Ray Smith; his parents, the Rev. Carnell Windell and Bertie Mae Atkins Smith; and a brother, Carnell Gray Smith. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 13, 2007, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Sam Gibbs, the Rev. James Shumate, and Keith Smith, and burial will follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, and other times at the home of Janet Smith Sawyers, 108 Charity Lane (off Simpson Road), Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Paul Danley, 101 Apollo Court, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Andras Neumark, the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Wanda Molina, Sarah Lineberry, and Candesia Arnold, and the 2nd floor staff at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital for their love, care, and support during Harrell's illness.
