Mr. Harry Hughes Clement, 92, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Clement was born June 18, 1916, in Surry County, to William Orville and Ora Marshall Clement. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a retired butcher and a member of White Plains Friends Meeting. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Pam Clement of Dobson; grandchildren, Kendra Eldridge and husband, Jason, Mackenzie Whitaker and fiance, Jimmy Gillespie, and Tyson Clement; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Whitaker; and a brother and sister-in-law, James and Opal Clement of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Clement was preceded in death by his loving wife, Clara Goad Clement. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Oakdale Cemetery. The service will be conducyted by the Rev. June Haislip and military honors will be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 12:30 until the hour of the service, and other times at Mr. Clement's home, 732 Old Highway 601 in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Mountain Valley Hospice and especially to special caregivers, Elva and Donald Stephens, for the tender care given to Mr. Clement during his illness.
