Harry William King

Mr. Harry William King, 83, of 1763 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday night, January 31, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. King was born August 25, 1925, in Surry County, to the late Wilburn and Annie Thacker King. He was a loving, kind and gentle father and a proud and loving grandfather. He was a veteran of the United States Army and Unites States Navy, serving during both the Korean Conflict and World War II. Harry was a member of the Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF and AM and the Surry Shrine Club, which he devoted much of his time transporting children to the Shriners Hospital. He retired from Adams-Millis/Hanes as supervisor over the knitting department; was a former board of director of Four Way Volunteer Fire Department, and a dedicated member of Piney Grove Baptist Church and the Senior Men's Bible Class. Surviving are his wife loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Ruby Midkiff King of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and Jerry Atkins of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Savannah Rose Atkins, Shelley May Atkins, and Harley William Atkins; first great grandchild will be expected to arrive in July; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Wallace and Daphney King and J.C. King, all of Mount Airy; sisters-in-law, Shirley Simmons of Mount Airy, Nell King of Charlotte, and Ann King of Atlanta, GA; numerous nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; and several great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. King was preceded in death by a grandson, Jed William Atkins; a sister, Hazel Kuykendal; and three brothers, Vance King, Jim King, and Tom King. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Piney Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kermit Gray, Mr. Gordon Jolley, Mr. Bobby Holder, and the Rev. Trent Lyons officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with full military rites conducted by the Mount Airy American Legion Post #123. Full Masonic rites will also be conducted at the grave site by Granite Lodge #322 AF and AM. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions can be sent to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
