Mr. Harry Oscar Monday, 83, of 183 Monday Avenue, Mount Airy, passed away Sunday morning, May 23, 2010, at his home. Mr. Monday was born July 14, 1926, in Surry County, son of the late George Oscar and Ida Childress Monday. Harry was a well-known football and baseball player during his adolescent years at Mount Airy High School in the early 1940s. As a result of his dedication to sports, he was inducted into the Mount Airy Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. He was a retired deputy sheriff from the Surry County Sheriff's Department and was the owner and operator of Monday's Auto Sales. Mr. Monday was a member of Unity Church. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gertrude Warren Monday of the home; a daughter, Karen Lorraine Monday of Mount Airy; a son and his fiancée, Gary Allan Monday and Bertha Hogsed of the home; five grandchildren and their spouses, Tabi and Smitty Smith of Oneida, TN, Zachary and Denise Monday, Keith and Dolly Carter, Karen Jean and Robby Waldrop, and Sharon West, all of Spartanburg, SC; fifteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Pat Hardy of Mount Airy; and several special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Monday was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Ammons and Katherine Booth; and three brothers, Dick Monday, Paul Monday, and Tom Monday. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Richard Ammons, the Rev. Buford Jessup, and the Rev. Robbie Vance officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
