Mr. Harvey Herman Vaughn, 71, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday night, April 21, 2021, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Vaughn was born April 28, 1949, in Carroll County, VA, the son of the late Harvey and Nancy McCraw Vaughn. Herman proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He retired from Surry County Emergency Medical Services after many years of service. Herman was a loving husband, father, Papa, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 35 years, Karen Newsome Vaughn; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Shelly Vaughn Taylor and her fiancé, Todd Smith, Amanda Vaughn Adams and Matt Adams, and Kendra Mauldin Matthews and Jerry Matthews; a son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Misti Mauldin; eight grandchildren, Cole Mauldin and his fiancée, Taylor Hill, Mason Taylor, Maggie Taylor, Carson Mauldin, Christopher Smith, Meg Adams, Joshua Smith, and Jonah Adams; a bonus grandson and his wife, Caleb and Casey Thomas; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Mildred and Jimmy Ratliff, Lettie and Jimmy Heath, Lorraine Heath, and Patsy and Larry Liss; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Elvin Vaughn, Melvin and Mary Vaughn, and Thurmond and Jeanette Vaughn; and two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Ken Newsome and Kevin and Leslie Newsome. In addition to his parents, Mr. Vaughn was preceded in death by three sisters, Imogene Stevens, Alma Reekes, and Pauline Creed; and two brothers, Carl Vaughn and Calvin Vaughn. The funeral service will be held Sunday, April 25, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Union Hill Friends Church, with the Rev. Ernest Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the church.
