Mrs. Hassie Mae Lineback Utt, 88, of 305 East Lebanon Street, Mount Airy, formerly of Cana, VA, went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, August 29, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Utt was born February 3, 1921, in Carroll County, VA, to the late Charlie and Molly Chappell Lineback. After losing her mother at age 4, she lived with Frank and Essie Chappell. She retired from Renfro Corporation after 31 years of service and later worked at the Cana Adult Home taking care of the elderly until her health forced her to retire. Mrs. Utt was a member of Flat Ridge Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, Roger Dale Utt of the home; two daughters, Mary Catherine Smith Escobedo of Columbia, SC, and Betty Jean Gwyn of Mount Airy; grandsons and spouses, Michael and Fran Smith, Roscoe Smith, and Drs. Mark and Amy Escobedo, all of Columbia, SC, Rodney Gwyn of Mount Airy, Johnny and Melanie Gwyn of Ararat, VA, Archie and Susan Utt of Cana, VA, Rusty and Holly Utt of Pilot Mountain, and Zack and Lauren Utt of Cana, VA; eleven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Hazel Foster of Winston-Salem, Betty Tucker of King, and Mary Wilson of Sparta; and six brothers and a sister-in-law, Harvey Lineback of Winston-Salem, Charles and Frances Lineback of Hillsville, VA, June Lineback and Doug Lineback, both of King, and Jimmy Lineback and Edward Lineback, both of Rural Hall. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Utt was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Utt; a son, Russell Utt, Jr.; a granddaughter, Pamela Annette Smith; grandsons, Jesus and Michael Escobedo; sons-in-law, Tony J. Smith, Mike Escobedo, and Wade Gwyn; a sister, Helen Lineback; and three brothers, Hennis, Hurley, and Bill Lineback. The funeral service will be held Monday, August 31, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Flat Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Bledsoe and the Rev. Oscar Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
