To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Hattie Mae Mabe Bennett, 88, of 139 Sharon Crest Drive, Statesville, and Rosewood Assisted Living Facility, Harmony, formerly of Mount Airy, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, March 25, 2007, following a brief illness. Born June 24, 1918, in Rockingham County, she was the daughter of William Henry Mabe and Cora Elizabeth Roberts Mabe. Hattie retired from the Renfro Knitting Mill in Mount Airy. She was a member of Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church in Claudville, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Henderson Bennett; two sisters, Cora Lee Mabe Felts and Elsie Mabe Childress; and a brother, James Mabe. She is survived by a sister, Lillian Mabe McAtee; three nieces, Irene McAtee (Barry) Henline of Statesville, Diann McAtee Blake of Kernersville, and Judy McAtee (Bill) Nixon of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Jerry Felts; and several great nieces and nephews. A graveside service celebrating Hattie's life will be held Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at 3:00 PM at Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Claudville, VA, with the Reverend Charles Zimmerman officiating. Brother Don Collins will also be offering a few words of remembrance. There will be a visitation Monday, March 26, 2007, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. For those who prefer, memorials may be given to the Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center, 231 Melrose Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103-2005. The family would like to express thanks to the staff at Rosewood Assisted Living Facility in Harmony and Davis Regional Medical Center, 3rd floor staff, in Statesville for their care and compassion during her brief illness.
