Hattie attended several of the small one or two room schools, the names of which are history - Stanley School and Center School. Most of the time, she walked with other children in the community one or two miles to school. Her final schooling to receive her diploma was at Dobson. Hattie was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and Sunday School. Mrs. Fowler was predeceased by her beloved husband of seventy-four years, Alexander Fowler; a brother Marvin White; and a sister, Bertha Deatte White Hodges; a step-mother, Annie Delanie Nance White; a half-brother, Davis Caywood White; and a daughter-in-law, Frances Jewel Cogdill Fowler. She is survived by her five sons and a daughter and their families: Romulus Harlow Fowler and wife Barbara Ann Fowler of Winston-Salem, James Avery Fowler, Sr., of Dobson, Alexander Beauford Fowler and wife Mabel Elizabeth Fowler, of Winston-Salem, Odell Fowler and wife Carolyn Olivia Fowler, of Dobson, Delano Roosevelt Fowler and wife Edith Annette Fowler, of Dobson, Annie Lou Fowler Rosendahl and husband James Frederick Rosendahl, of Raleigh. She has ten grandsons and eight granddaughters, also twenty-four great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and a sister Viola White Corder of Havelock, NC. She was known as Ma throughout the community and by the family's friends who visited with her much of her lifetime. Ma was a very good seamstress and an excellent cook. She quilted and crocheted doilies, table and buffet runners that caught everyone's eye who saw them. She won ribbons at the fair for her entries both knitting and crocheting Afghans, doilies, dolls, etc. She attended Surry Community College Senior Citizens Classes several years and mastered needle point, candle wicking, basket weaving, knitting, sewing with a surger, and many other techniques. She loved to cook; especially biscuits and everyone will tell you she was the best biscuit maker. She was skilled at gardening, canning, and freezing produce from the garden. She loved to grow flowers. All these things she did for her family and friends. Most importantly, Mrs. Fowler loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and always wanted to do the right things. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother who exemplified grace and gift of hospitality that will not soon be forgotten.
