Mrs. Mary Hazel Collins Surratt, age 89, of Cana, passed away on Wednesday morning, September 15, 2021, at her home. She was born in Surry County on January 24, 1932, to the late James B. and Ester Lenora Boyles Collins. She was a wonderful loving mom, grandma, sister and friend. Left to cherish her memory are her two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Shannon Surratt and William Leslie “Lester” and Nicole Surratt; grandchildren, Amanda and Reid Vernon, Audrey and Tyler Collins, Jozilynn Surratt, and Will Surratt; great-grandchildren, Lynsey Vernon, Liam Vernon, and Lacey Collins; three sisters, Annie Lee Vernon, Rachel Puckett, and Ruth Holt; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Gay Jones. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Surratt was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Ann Surratt; her first husband who died during the Korean War serving as a medic in the US Army, Merlin E. Marshall; her second husband, Private First Class, William Lester “Bill” Surratt; two sisters, Linda Riddle and Virginia Leftwich; and by four brothers, Rossie Junior Collins, James H. Collins, Dennis Collins, and Gene Collins. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at 1:00 PM at the Surratt Family Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Zane Fishel will be officiating. There will not be any formal visitation for Mrs. Surratt at the funeral home.
