Hazel Marie Bobbitt Sumner

Mrs. Hazel Marie Bobbitt Sumner, 88 of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday evening January 4, 2017 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Sumner was born in Carroll County on September 16, 1928 to the late Posey Green Bobbitt and Florence Lawson Bobbitt. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother that welcomed everyone and never knew a stranger. She was always smiling and kidding and loved her grandchildren beyond compare. She was an avid gardener who enjoyed all types of flowers. She was an excellent cook and known especially for her Sunday fried chicken dinners. Mrs. Sumner was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. Mrs. Sumner is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Dan Kiger of State Road; her son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Karen Sumner of Mount Airy; her grandchildren, Shannon and Josh Francis of Francisco, Tyler Norman and Brooke Link of State Road, and Victoria Kiger of State Road; her great-granddaughter, Laura Madilynn Francis; a sister, Patsy Seal of Mount Airy; several nieces and nephews; several special friends and neighbors; and three sisters-in-law, Ruby Bobbitt of Galax, VA, Erna Jean Bobbitt of Mount Airy, and Louise Bobbitt of Galax, VA. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sumner was preceded in death by her husband, Lemuel Dewey “L. D.” Sumner, Jr; four sisters, Beatrice Golden, Bertha Woodruff, Cora Lee Puckett, Lettie June Hanks and an infant sister; and three brothers, Elmer Bobbitt, P. G. Bobbitt, and Hobert Bobbitt. Funeral services will be at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy on Sunday January 8, 2017 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Jimmy McCraw officiating with burial to follow at Skyline Memory Garden. The family will receive friends on Sunday at the funeral home from 1:00 – 2:00 PM. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Doctors and staff at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, 10th floor North and 6th floor intermediate care, and also to the staff at Woltz Hospice Home.
