Ms. Helen Louise Davenport Childers, of Winston-Salem, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2009, after years of struggle with an incurable bipolar disorder. Helen was born May 21, 1946, in Surry County, daughter of Edward and Lora Semones Davenport. She was a 1967 graduate of the North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and spent most of her life in Charlotte. Medical treatment enabled Helen to pursue with dedication her profession as a nurse and as a teaching nurse for 30 years. During that time, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She received national recognization from the NAMI as the founder of a local chapter for bipolar disorder in Charlotte. Gifted at an early age, Helen was a Surry County spelling champion, a talented seamstress, a breast cancer survivor, and a Christian. She was preceded in death by her father. Helen is survived by her mother, Lora Semones Davenport of Clemmons; a son, John Edward Bryant of Orlando, FL; a sister, Jane (Tony) Goins of Lewisville; and nieces and nephews. A graveside celebration of Helen's life will be held at Rockford Baptist Church Cemetery in Rockford at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 26, 2009. Memorials may be made to CenterPoint Human Services, Hospice and Palliative Care Center, or a charity of the donor's choice. The family wishes to acknowledge the caregivers at Hospice and Palliative Care of Winston-Salem, Clemmons Village 1, and Grace Healthcare.
