Mr. Herbert Hoover Atkins, 80, of Dobson, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2010, at his home. He was born April 2, 1930, in Surry County, to the late Elzvan and Bertie Dollyhigh Atkins. He retired from United Technologies Plastics after 42 years of service. He was a member of the Ararat Friends Meeting and was a long-time member of the Copeland Ruritan Club. Surviving are his loving wife, Lena Johnson Atkins of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda Whitaker of Stony Knoll, Betty and Mike White of Dobson, and Barbara and David Embry of Mount Airy; five grandchildren and their spouses, Hank and Tracie Whitaker, Michelle and Adam Wall, Ramsey and Toyna Embry, Leslie and Paul Faistl, and Jeanna and Jim Jenkins; eleven great-grandchildren, Tyler Whitaker, Clay Whitaker, Autumn Embry, Remington Embry, Geona Jenkins, Ananiah Jenkins, Elyjah Jenkins, Owen Jenkins, Evan Wall, Stella Wall, and Carter Faistl; a sister, Sally Mae Key of Lexington; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, James Aubrey and Vernice Atkins of Mount Airy, Garnett and Lou Ray Atkins of King, Roger and Norma Atkins of Stanleyville, and Gladys Atkins of Kernersville; a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Libby Inman; and special nieces, Kim Clayton and Kelly Hull. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Hattie Lou Davis and Opal Atkins; a brother, Elbert Atkins; a son-in-law, Moir Henry Whitaker Jr.; and a special niece, Kris Stone. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson, with the Rev. Dennis Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Ararat Friends Meeting Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody-Davis Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Ararat Friends Meeting, c/o Stanley Joyce, 232 Brewster Lane, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday June 29, 2010 in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson, burial will follow in the Ararat Friends Meeting Cemetery. Rev. Dennis Moore will officiate the services. The family will receive friends at Moody-Davis Funeral Home on Monday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
