Herbert L. Atkins

Mr. Herbert L. Atkins, age 84 of Millers Creek, and formerly of Mt. Airy, passed away Monday, September 01, 2008 at his daughter's home. Mr. Atkins was born in Sandson, VA to Livingston Elwood Atkins, Sr. and Ida Lee Montague Atkins. He was a retired Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Alan Ferguson of Millers Creek; Betsy and Bill Hart of Germantown, MD; grandchildren, Katie F. Salvaggio and husband Michael of Statesville, Chris Ferguson of Boone and Lindsay Hart of Washington, DC and very special pals, Max, Diesel, Skippy, Hank and Tank. In addition to his parents, Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Simmons Atkins; and two brothers, Livingston Elwood Atkins, Jr. and James Montague Atkins. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, September 6, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. Steve Lindsley. Inurnment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery with military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Mt. Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7:00 to 9:00 at Moody Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wilkes at 1907 W. Park Dr., N. Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
