Mr. Herbert Hoover Chilton, 79, of 424 Stanford Church Road, Siloam, passed away Wednesday morning, August 12, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Chilton was born September 4, 1929, in Surry County, to the late Jasper and Eliza Johnson Chilton. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Germany. He was a loving and doting husband, a fabulous father, and always happy, encouraging, a fighter and a joy to be around. Herb's infamous words were "I ain't gonna complain." His time here with us seemed short; he's gone on to be with his heavenly Father. He was a retired farmer and worked on several tobacco markets. Mr. Chilton was a graduate of Copeland High School and a member of Pine Hill Friends Meeting. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Dotty Bruner Chilton of the home; a son, David Randall Chilton of the home; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth Ann Chilton Whitaker and Allen of Siloam and Rachel Chilton Masten and Larry of Ararat; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Moir Chilton and Linda and Johnson Chilton and Carol, all of Ararat; several nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Chilton was preceded in death by four brothers, Bishop Chilton, Paul Chilton, Kenneth Chilton, and Edsil Chilton. The funeral service will be held Sunday, August 16, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Pine Hill Friends Meeting, with Pastor Michael Thames and the Rev. Clayton Tilley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, August 13, 2009, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions can be made to the Pine Hill Friends Meeting Building Fund, c/o Rebecca Fulk, 766 Quaker Church Road, Siloam, NC 27047.
