Mr. Herbert Avent Hall, 79, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Hall was born July 17, 1932, in Patrick County, VA, the son of the late Jessie Lee and Ida Bell Bowman Hall. He was a devoted member of Fancy Gap Baptist Church and retired from W.S. Wolfe Drug Company as manager of the Wolfe's Den Restaurant. He was a familiar face on Main Street for over 40 years. Herb was an avid golfer and loved to follow his beloved Mount Airy Bears. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Delois "Dee" Puckett Hall of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Gary Massey of Raleigh; two grandsons, Christopher "Chris" Giles and his wife, Angie, of Raleigh and John David Massey, a student at East Carolina University in Greenville; a great-grandson, Gregory Evan Giles of Raleigh; a grandpuppy, Winston; two sisters, Eunice Hall Puckett of Greensboro and Perlie Hall Hiatt of Mount Airy; a brother and two sisters-in-law, Ralph and Ila Hall of Ararat, VA, and Polly Hall of Lowgap; a beloved sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ann and Steve Flippin of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hall was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers-in-law, Hattie and Harry Eaton, Alvin Hiatt, Jr., and the Rev. Lacy Puckett; and a brother, J.D. Hall. The funeral service will be held Friday, August 5, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Fancy Gap Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dwight Sechrist and the Dr. Greg Mathis officiating. Burial will follow in the Doe Run Baptist Church Cemetery in Ararat, VA. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Fancy Gap Baptist Church, and other times at the Hall home. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to all those who helped with Herbert's care during his illness, including Fancy Gap Baptist Church and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Dr. Glenn Golaszewski, Tabitha Kelly, and Carol Casstevens.
