Mr. Herman Lee “Buck” Boles, 89, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday morning, April 23, 2025, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Boles was born September 2, 1935, in Surry County, to the late Gladys Boles Bingman. Buck dedicated much of his life to serving others – first in uniform and later with a tool belt. He served honorably in the United States Army during the tense days of the Cuban Missile Crisis, a time that shaped his enduring sense of duty and resilience. Following his military service, he began a long and respected career as a lineman with Harrison and Wright, where he worked for 20 years before retiring. Buck was a member of Dover Baptist Church, and he found great strength and fellowship in his faith. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Grayson and Tammie Boles and Randy Boles; four grandchildren, Terry Chad Key, Brittany Marion, Meagan Boles, and Melanie Boles; six great-grandchildren, a sister, Susan Yvonne Bingman; several nieces and nephews; and special first cousins. who were like siblings, Bro. Wayne Payne and Ruth Busick. In addition to his mother, Mr. Boles was preceded in death by his wife, JoNell Venable Boles; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Gregory Keith Martin; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Boles; a grandson, Shayne Crue Martin; a sister, Mary Frances Johnson; and three brothers, Lonnie Bingman, Jimmy Bingman, and Gray Bingman. The funeral service will be held Sunday, April 27, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Dover Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Jones and Bro. Wayne Payne officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
