Herman Weldon Hicks

Mr. Herman Weldon Hicks, 82, of Ararat, passed away Thursday morning, December 22, 2016, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Hicks was born May 15, 1934, in Surry County, one of ten children born to the late Wiley Fountain and Maude Lula Watson Hicks. Herman retired as a stone cutter from Acme Stone Company after 30 years of service. He attended Mount Airy First Church of the Brethren and was a member of Ararat Masonic Lodge #558 AF and AM. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Jean Atkins Hicks of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky Weldon and Diane Hicks and Jeffery Lee and Frenda Hicks, all of Ararat; two granddaughters, Susan Hicks Jones and her husband, Kevin, of King and Cheryl Bryant of Ararat; four great-grandchildren, Emily Bryant and her fiancé, Rocky Hall, Isaiah Puckett, Taylor Jones, and Peyton Jones; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Bertie Mae Hall, Iola and Richard Bullis, and Gladys and Bobby Wilson, all of Mount Airy; three sisters-in-law, Leona Hicks and Jewel Hicks, both of Mount Airy, and Virginia Hicks of Richmond, VA; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Kirby and Betty Wood of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hicks was preceded in death by two grandsons, David Hicks and Travis Bryant; an infant brother, Broadus Hicks; a sister and two brothers-in-law, Verlie and Dewey Hill and Alfred Hall; and four brothers, Coney Everette Hicks, Arlis Leonard Hicks, Jay Ira Hicks, and Norris Allen Hicks. The funeral service will be held Monday, December 26, 2016, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Pastor Vassie Vaught and Pastor Wallace Cole officiating. Masonic rites will also be conducted by Ararat Masonic Lodge #558 AF and AM. The family will receive friends Monday from noon until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mount Airy First Church of the Brethren, 161 Welch Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
