Mr. Herman Thomas Nichols, 91, of Mt. Airy, passed away at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, Tuesday, January 26, 2021. He was born in Surry County, June 23, 1929 to the late Charlie Levi and Minnie Payne Nichols. Mr. Nichols bravely served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He graduated from Franklin High School, where he played basketball, and continued to play during college, in the Navy, and some semi-pro teams during his life. Mr. Nichols loved his family, and was proud of his grandsons, and the young men they have become. He enjoyed spending time with his family and found a lot of joy in his great-grandchildren. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Gaynelle Lena Holder Nichols; his son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Tina Nichols; grandsons, Jeremy Nichols and wife Amber, and Nathan Nichols and wife Lyndsey; great grandchildren, Dylan Cooke, Lena, Andrew, William, and Rosalyn Nichols. In addition to his parents, Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by his sisters, Polly Quesinberry, Dot Cumming, Lou Sanders, and Esther Johnson; and a brother Johnny Nichols. A graveside service will be held at Ivy Green Baptist Church Cemetery, Friday, January 29, 2021 at 2:00 PM with Bro. Tommy Nichols officiating. Mr. Nichols will lie-in-state at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy, Friday morning prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Rd., Dobson, NC 27017 or the VFW, 285 Pine Ridge Trail, Pinnacle, NC 27043.
