Mr. Hershell Wendell Bunker, 96, of Pilot Mountain, passed away peacefully on Friday night, December 25, 2020, at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy. He was born December 16, 1924, in Orange County, to the late Oliver Wendell and Mammie Sara Jane Simmons Bunker. Mr. Bunker proudly served our country during World War II in the Army Air Force as a tail gunner on a B24 in the 449th Bomb Group. Mr. Bunker was also a proud member of the Pilot Mountain Post 9436 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Bunker was a retired agricultural teacher for over 30 years at East Wilkes High School. He was also a member of the Ruritan Club for many years, in both Ronda and Pilot Mountain. Left to cherish his memory are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth Dale (Mary Katherine) Bunker and Wendell Sanders Bunker; two grandchildren, Sarah Bunker (Kam) Mueller and Mary Gena Dorsett; two great-grandchildren, Bradley Alex and Mason Cole Danowski; two sisters, Jessie Bunker Bryant and Jane Bunker Workman; two brothers, Fred Bunker and Henry Bunker; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bunker was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Ethelene Beasley Bunker; two sisters, Ellen Ross Dees and Gladys Bunker; and a brother, Max Bunker. A graveside celebration of life service will be held Saturday, July 17, 2021, at 3:30 PM at Skyline Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Pilot Mountain Post 9436 of Veterans of Foreign Wars, c/o Harlan Hawks, 285 Pine Ridge Trail, Pinnacle, NC 27043.
