Howard Gerald Manning, Sr



Mr. Howard Gerald Manning, Sr., 90, of Mount Airy, NC, died in his sleep on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Golden Living Center. Mr. Manning was born May 24, 1923, in Burlington, VT, the son of the late Gerald Van Ness Manning and Elizabeth Ann Davis. He graduated from Supertown-Milton High School in Vermont. Howard served in the United States Army from November 1942 to December 1945. He had been a member of the Peru Fire Department, both active and inactive status for 15 years. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter FE Walker SR and JR #61. He was a Mason for over 60 years and a member of the AuSable River Lodge #149 Free and Accepted Masons. Howard worked construction for most of his life. Prior to retirement, he worked as a security officer with Bermuda Village in Advance, NC. His hobbies were fishing and bowling. Survivors include his children, Paul of Virginia, Howard of New York, John of Florida, Charles of Pennsylvania, and Teresa of Georgia; a stepson, Lewis Reed of North Carolina; twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Geraldine of New York; brothers, David of New York and George of Texas; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Manning was preceded in death by three brothers, John Manning, Walter Manning, and Wallace Manning. At Howard's request, there will be no public calling or memorial service. He has donated his body to Wake Forest University School of Medicine for scientific medical research. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Disabled American Veterans. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
