Howell Gene Harris

Mr. Howell Gene Harris, 66, of 1426 Turkey Ford Road, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, September 20, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Harris was born February 9, 1942, in Carroll County, VA, to the late Howell Garnett and Merle Strickland Harris. Gene was a retired truck driver from Ruan Transport in Winston-Salem. During his spare time, Gene enjoyed attending horse sales and plow days with his Belgian and Percheron draft horses and also car shows and local cruise-ins with his 1939 Ford. Mr. Harris was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda Atkins Harris of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Johnny Collins of Dobson; three grandsons, Ethan Marvin, Jared Marvin, and Matthew Collins, all of Dobson; a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Tony and Janet Atkins of Mount Airy and Libby Harris of Cana, VA; two nephews and a spouse, Brian and Sheila Harris of Mount Airy and Jay Harris of Cana, VA; and a special friend, Clifford Shockley of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Harris was preceded in death by a brother, David Harris. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 23, 2008, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Dennis W. "Bud" Cameron and Brother Tim Smith, and burial will follow in the New Home Church of Christ Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
