Hugh Arestus Childress

Mr. Hugh Arestus Childress, 86, of Thurmond, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. He was born in Yadkin County, February 20, 1924, to the late Jessie Alonzo and Martha Jane Edwards Childress. Mr. Childress was retired form Newman Brothers Well Drilling and a faithful member of Charity Hill Baptist Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served our country during World War II. Survivors include a daughter, Kay Frances Smith; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Arthur Ray and Betty Childress, Johnny Wayne Childress, Charles Edward and Rebecca Childress, and Billy Joe Childress, all of Thurmond; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a sister, Darlene Childress Crouse of Wilkes County; and a brother and sister-in-law, Talmage and Attie Childress of State Road. In addition to his parents, Mr. Childress was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Pauline Roberts Childress. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, March 5, 2010, at Charity Hill Baptist Church, by the Rev. Brian Caldwell, the Rev. Claude Lloyd, the Rev. Jerry Wilmoth, and the Rev. Rex Walker. Burial will follow in the Crestwood Cemetery, with military honors by the American Legion Post 123. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 4, 2010, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the church.
