Mr. Hurley Logan Vernon, age 78 of Cana, VA passed away Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem. Mr. Vernon was born December 31, 1929 in Surry County to the late Willie Logan and Nettie Mardella Vaughn Vernon. He married the former Dorsia "Dot" Leonard on October 3, 1949. Mr. Vernon graduated from Hillsville High School in 1948. He was the retired owner and operator of Vernon Orchard. Mr. Vernon was a familiar face at the downtown Greensboro Farmers Curb Market for 64 years. He enjoyed making many friends there with vendors and customers alike. Until his recent illness, you could always depend on him being there on market days during the growing season. He began taking produce there with his father at the age of 14 and continued on with his wife after his father's death in 1980. He was a life long dedicated member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church where he had held various positions, Sunday school teacher and choir leader and currently remained the Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He had been a strong leader in the community and Carroll County. He formerly served on the Carroll County Board of Supervisors; School Board and the Board of Social Services. He was an avid rabbit hunter with his favorite breed, beagles. Mr. Vernon bred and trained beagles for the enjoyment for himself and others. He loved baseball. Through the years he played baseball and coached on various local leagues when he was a young adult and then coached little league until his first heart surgery in 1989. He was an incredibly compassionate man who never ceased to give to others. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 59 years, Dorsia Irene "Dot" Leonard Vernon of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Brent Riddle of Mt. Airy, Donna and John Jackson of Cana; a son Lindsey L. Vernon of Cana; grandchildren, Holly and Scott Gunter, Ashley and Corey Mills all of Mt. Airy, John Jackson, III of Raleigh, Will Jackson and Ben Jackson both of Cana; great grandchildren, Jake Gunter and Cassidy Mills and a sister and brother-in-law Sylvia and Revis Gentry of Cana. In addition to his parents, Mr. Vernon was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Sue Veit. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Oak Ridge Baptist Church by Rev. David "Buster" Sechrist and Rev. Lonnie Gunter, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. His body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends Monday, June 23, 2008 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Cana. Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy is assisting the Vernon Family.
