Ila Haynes Phillips

Loving mother, grandmother, and friend, Ila Haynes Phillips, 76, of Winston-Salem, departed her earthly home for eternal life in Heaven on Wednesday, December 31, 2008. Ila was born February 12, 1932 in Dobson, NC, to John Sidney and Leila Dinkins Haynes. She had four siblings: Mary Haynes, Davis Haynes, John Henry Haynes, and Irene Haynes Dobbins, all of whom preceded her in death. A natural caretaker, Ila made a career out of nursing that would speak to her lifelong character of compassion for others. After finishing nursing school in Mount Airy, Ila went on to complete her graduate degree in obstetrics in Detroit, Michigan where she met and married her late husband John McIntosh Phillips. Ila's unique passion for medicine provided her with a successful 47 years as a registered nurse, during which she helped those in need in the ER, OB/GYN unit, and nursing homes, among other places. Ila was one of the first women to teach Lamaze. She is survived by her daughter Suzanne Ila Phillips Pugh of Clemmons, NC, friend Dan Fawley; son John McIntosh Phillips and wife Laura Suzanne Phillips of Bentonville, Arkansas; her grandchildren Allison Suzanne Millsaps, Elizabeth Paige Millsaps, Eric Watson Pugh, Jack McIntosh Phillips, and "Baby" Kate Elaine Phillips. Her family was very close. Loving sister-in-laws include Louise Simmons Haynes of Elkin and Peggy Terrell Haynes of Dobson. Nieces and nephews include Max and Cathy Haynes, Vickie and Bud Cameron, Rickey and Donna Dobbins, David and Deanne Haynes, John Robert Haynes, Mary and Zeb Haines, McKay Cameron and Hannah Haynes. Special neighbors that provided loving care include Bill, Maddie, Annie, Sid and Julie.In her twilight years, Ila was known and loved by many for her sincerity, care, and selflessness. Even after her nursing years had come to an end, Ila stayed active in her community and neighborhood, making friends and caring for others in any way she could. She will always be remembered and cherished by those close to her for her comforting presence, sense of humor, engaging conversation, and ageless outlook on life. Beloved even in her last years by many of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life, Ila Phillips was a true testament to God's unfaltering love and compassion for all His children. A graveside service will be held on Friday January 2, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery in Dobson, NC. Family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Brenner Children's Hospital, Winston-Salem, NC. Moody-Davis Funeral Home is serving the Phillips family.
