Iola Mamie Hicks Bullis

Mrs. Iola Mamie Hicks Bullis, 89, of Mount Airy, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday afternoon, August 5, 2021. Mrs. Bullis was born March 7, 1932, in Surry County, one of ten children born to the late Wiley and Maude Watson Hicks. Iola was reared on a family farm in the White Plains community and attended White Plains School. On December 22, 1950, Iola married Richard Spease Bullis, and together they were a vital part of the Mount Airy community for 70 years. She dedicated her life to the creation of a loving home for her family and was the source of ceaseless support to those she loved. She is survived by her husband, Richard Spease Bullis of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tim Atkins of Mount Airy; a sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and Bobby Wilson of Mount Airy; a sister-in-law, Barbara Hicks Gwyn of Mount Airy; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bullis was preceded in death by her sweet and precious granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Atkins; two sisters, Verlie Hicks Hill and Bertie Mae Hicks Hall; and six brothers, Coney Hicks, Leonard Hicks, Ira Hicks, Norris Hicks, Herman Hicks, and Broadus Hicks. A service of worship and celebration of Iola’s life will be held Monday, August 9, 2021, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Elder Carlton Brown and Elder George Paul officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday from 9:30 until 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
