Ira William "Bill" Sykes

Mr. Ira William “Bill” Sykes, 86, of Mt. Airy, passed away at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, Tuesday, December 21, 2021. He was born in Surry County April 13, 1935, to the late Charles and Elsie Mosley Sykes. Mr. Sykes was a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He retired from Harrell Oil Company after many years of service. Mr. Sykes will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Vernell Southern Sykes; his daughter Annette Sykes White; son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Lori Sykes; daughter-in-law Melissa Sykes, sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Lou and Wade Johnson, Tina and Harold Mooney; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rayburn and Geraldine Sykes, brother David Sykes and sister Pam Sykes; grandchildren, Dennis Willis and wife Julie, Ashley McKnight, Andrea Sykes, Jacob White, Jordan and Austin Sykes, great grandchildren Kam McKnight, Summer and Taylor Cummings along with several nieces and nephews; and a host of special neighbors and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sykes was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Sykes, Jr. and son, Dennis Sykes. Although there will not be a formal visitation, everyone is welcome to pay their respect to Mr. Sykes at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy on Thursday morning from 8:00 AM until noon. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, December 23, 2021, at Oakdale Cemetery with Elder Jimmy Joyce officiating.
