Mrs. Irene Whitaker Johnson, age 85, of Dobson passed away on May 29, 2007 at the Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. She was born in Surry County on September 24, 1921 to the late Manus Asbury Whitaker and the late Josephine Dinkins Whitaker. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Charlie Clarence Johnson; a daughter Adair Johnson; two sisters Stacie Smith and Susie Hyatt; seven brothers Arthur, Elmer, Robie, Odell, Paul, Herschel and Troy Whitaker. Irene was an active member of Salem Baptist Church. She sang in the choir and served in many leadership roles in the church. She was a home maker and was an Avon Representative for Twenty Five Years. Irene's most treasured role was as a wife, mother and grandmother. Surviving are one daughter Kim Johnson of Dobson; one son and daughter-in-law Eugene and June Johnson of Maggie Valley, NC; four grandchildren, Todd Johnson of Holly Springs, NC, Sherry Cox of Mt. Airy, Chris Johnson of Mt. Airy, Monty Southern, of Dobson; five great grandchildren Michael Johnson, Jessica Johnson, Meredith Cox, Avery Cox and Aubrey Southern. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Friday June 1, 2007 at Salem Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Bobby Lewis will officiate the service. The Family will receive friends at Salem Baptist Church on Thursday evening from 6 until 8 PM and at other times at Kim's home on 113 Rockford Road, Dobson, NC 27017. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Hugh Chatham Nursing Center Activity Fund 700 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, NC 28621 or to the Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care 401 Technology Lane Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
