Mr. Isom “Bobby” Hanes, age 92, of Mountain Park, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy. He was born, January 4, 1932, in Wilkes County, to the late Grover Watson Hanes Sr., and the late Nancy Emma Fields Hanes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Katie Jane Simpson Hanes; and his siblings, Vetra McClellan, Irene Roane, Nancy Hamlin, and G.W. Hanes Jr.
Left to cherish his memories are his daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Mark Payne; his grandchildren and their spouses, Kyle and Maddison Payne, and Dara Payne and Jessica Bass; great grandchildren, Ayden Payne and Jackson Payne; nieces and nephews, Johnny and Reeceanna Hanes, Bob and Diane McClellan, Susan and Sam Gentry, Janie and Jimmy Johnston; great nieces and nephews; John and Katie Hanes, Sammy and Erin Gentry, Nancy and Grant Russell, Robin McClellan, Tina and Luke Hordyk; a special friend, Betty Collins, and a special caregiver, Peggy Crain.
Mr. Hanes served in the United States Navy on the USS Douglass in the Mediterranean Sea for two years and following his return was an active member of Mountain Park VFW. After his service in the military, he dedicated forty-two years of his life to Chatham Manufacturing Company in the piece dye department. During those years, he did income taxes at night and after his retirement from Chatham for fifty plus years. Mr. Hanes also taught income taxes at Surry Community College at night for many years. He and his brother were true businessmen. They were always involved in new business ventures. In their younger years, they sold small items from a traveling truck. They also owned a mobile home park where they rented mobile homes to people including many teachers at Mountain Park Elementary. He was a member of the Surry County School Board for twelve years and during his time fought hard to keep Mountain Park Elementary School open. He was devoted to his community and well loved and respected by all that knew him
Mr. Hanes loved his church. He was a Sunday School teacher for the boy’s class and adult men’s class for the majority of time at Mountain Park. He was a deacon and chairman of the deacon board for forty plus years. Family was certainly right next to God for him. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Katie, for forty-eight years and amazing father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved traveling with his family and was able to visit forty-nine states in his travel.
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 27, 2024, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Moody-Davis Funeral Service in Dobson. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at Mountain Park Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Henderson and Dr. Rick Jackson officiating. A graveside service with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Post 1142 will follow. The family wishes to thank the staff of Central Continuing Care and Mountain Valley Hospice for the care shown for their loved one. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Park Baptist Church, 419 Mountain Road, State Road NC 28676.
