Mr. Jack Wayne Ashburn, 88, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday night, November 23, 2015, at his home. A native of Surry County, Mr. Ashburn was born in 1927, and was the son of the late R. Glenn and Eva Bell Ashburn. Wayne graduated from White Plains High School in 1945. Following his graduation, he entered the United States Navy and served in World War II. He worked as general manager at Granite Hosiery for many years and later retired from Armtex. Wayne was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #123, a member of Renfro Masonic Lodge #691 AF and AM, and served on the Mount Airy Planning Board for 14 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway, especially with his great-grandchildren, fishing, and trips to Emerald Isle with his family. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Robert Hawks of Winston-Salem; a daughter-in-law, Natalie Ashburn of Tucson, AZ; a grandson and his wife, Wayne and Carman Hawks of Willow Spring; two great-grandchildren, Mason Hawks and Ashlyn Hawks, both of Willow Spring; a sister and brother-in-law, Lynda and Wade Doby of Lowgap; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends, Jack and Tish Arrington of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Ashburn was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Angie Marshall Ashburn; a son, Tom Ashburn; a sister, Roberta Glenn Springthorpe; and his foster parents, Richard and Ethel Ashburn Coe. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 27, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Robert McCrary officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
