Jack Allen Cox, Sr

Mr. Jack Allen "Smoo Cox" Cox, Sr., 78, of 1659 Pedigo Ridge Road, Claudville, VA, went home to be with his heavenly Father on Monday night, July 2, 2012. Mr. Cox was born June 6, 1934, in Surry County, one of nine children born to the late Rhoten Garfield and Mabel Gladys Easter Cox. Jack graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1952. He was a loader operator for over 50 years. He owned and operated Jack A. Cox Construction before his retirement. Mr. Cox was a faithful member of the Ararat Ruritan Club, a member of the board of directors of the Ararat Rescue Squad, and a former member of the Ararat Fire Department, serving as chief for many years. Mr. Cox is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Shelby Pedigo Cox of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Ann and Martin Collins of Mount Airy, Joan and David Rose of Ooltewah, TN, and Dawn and Lee Lawson of Claudville, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, Jack Allen Cox, Jr. and Sheila Cox of Westfield; six grandchildren, Emily Clement and her husband, Joe, David Cox, Denny Martin, Hannah Lawson and her special friend, Jason France, Jordan Lawson, and Lauren Collins and her special friend, Matt Burns; a great-granddaughter, Ila Jo Clement; a sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Ronnie Simpson of Mount Airy; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Jimmy and Gail Cox of Winston-Salem, Dennis and Brenda Cox of Mount Airy, and Carin Cox of Graham; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cox was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Margaret Cox; and four brothers, Ted Cox, Jake Cox, Paul Cox, and Michael Lynn Cox. The funeral service will be held Friday, July 6, 2012, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Dr. Rick Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the Unity Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
