Jack Dean Gravley

Mr. Jack Dean Gravley, 84, of Mount Airy, passed away at his home on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, surrounded by his caring family. He was born September 24, 1931, in Surry County, to the late Walter Samuel and Bessie Jones Gravley. Mr. Gravley graduated as valedictorian of his graduating class at Flat Rock High School. He bravely served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and married the love of his life, the late Jennie Jacquline Hiatt Gravley. Mr. Gravley was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He was employed with Inman Electric for 40 years, where he served as vice president and never missed a day of work. Mr. Gravley was an avid gardener with both vegetables and flowers. By the ladies in the neighborhood, he was known as the “go to man” due to his ability to fix most everything. Mr. Gravley is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Lee McGee; his son, Dean Gravley; his grandson, his pride and joy, Zachary Dean McGee; a brother, Gene Gravley; and his “granddogs”, Layla and Turbo. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gravley was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 64 years, Jennie Jacquline “Jackie” Hiatt Gravley; a sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Ray Adams; a sister-in-law, Virginia Gravley; a nephew, Larry Adams; a great nephew, Brian Greenwood; and a “granddog”, Killer. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, June 10, 2016, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, with Bishop John Bradley officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with full military honors conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday, June 9, 2016, where his body will remain until the time to be taken to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, with a special thanks to Margo Collins, Anita Wallace, Tina Leonard, RN, and Chaplain Kevin Wilson, and a special longtime caregiver, Renee Sechrist.
