Jack Bernard Overby, 87, died Saturday December 12th at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Jack was born on January 20, 1928 in Mt. Airy to the late McKinley and Merlie Overby. He was a 1948 graduate of Mt. Airy H.S. Jack served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. He retired in 1976 as a USAF Technical Sergeant after an over two decade military career as a communications specialist. After many duty postings throughout the world, including Alaska, Britain, Japan and New England, Jack returned to live in Mt. Airy in 1987, reacquainting with friends and helping care for his mother. In his later years Jack was known locally for his devotion to rescuing and caring for his collection of cats. Predeceased by sisters Juanita Gwyn and Estelle Crandell, he is survived by several nephews, nieces, and their children. In the care of Moody Funeral Services in Mt. Airy, friends will be received on Wednesday December 16th from 5 to 7p.m. Jack will be interred in Oakdale Cemetery Thursday. Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
