Jack Scales Vernon

Mr. Jack Scales Vernon, 81, of 128 Airview Drive, Mount Airy, passed away Friday evening, September 13, 2013, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Vernon was born March 29, 1932, in Surry County, one of ten children born to the late M.C. and Betty Mae Younger Vernon. Jack was a self-employed construction contractor for many years. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joanne Gentry Vernon of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Tommy Atkins of Mount Airy; a son, Monty Dale Vernon of Mount Airy; a granddaughter and her husband, Amanda and Mark Dudek of San Antonio, TX; a grandson and his fiancée, Joshua Jack Atkins and Shannon Dollyhite of Mount Airy; three great-grandchildren, Madison Elizabeth Dudek and Emma Charlotte Dudek, both of San Antonio, TX, and Kayden Chase Atkins of Mount Airy; a sister, Mary Vernon Key of Mount Airy; two sisters-in-law, Alma Vernon and Christine Vernon, both of Mount Airy; two brothers-in-law, Walter Cloud, Jr. of Mount Airy and Baxter Smith of Hickory; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends and neighbors. In addition to his parents, Mr. Vernon was preceded in death by a son, Mark Anthony Vernon; four sisters, Rachel Vernon Willard, Jettie Vernon Riggs, Grace Vernon Smith, and Doris Vernon Cloud; and four brothers, Wade Vernon, Brady Vernon, Grady "Pet" Vernon, and Reid Vernon. The funeral service will be held Monday, September 16, 2013, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Randy Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or a charity of the donor's choice.
