Mr. Jack Preston Hale Wyrick, 90, of 218 William Penn Street, Mount Airy, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 27, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Wyrick was born April 23, 1924, in Surry County, the son of the late Dailey Vernon and Louise Overby Wyrick. Jack proudly served our country in the United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged February 8, 1946. He also served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged September 27, 1957; and served in the United States Air Force, being discharged in 1962. Mr. Wyrick, affectionately known as "Grandpa," was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and a best friend to his son, Jack, Jr. He retired from the City of Mount Airy after many years of service and was a member of Midway Baptist Church for more than 30 years. "Grandpa" enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and sitting on his porch watching his birds. He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Debbie and Keith Dayringer of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Donna and David Wright of Cape Coral, FL, and Angela Diane Bowman and her fiancé, Johnny Sumner of Claudville, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, Jack Preston Wyrick, Jr. and Ellen Wyrick of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren, Christopher Dale Wright of Greensboro, Krista Leeann Wyrick Thomas of Mount Airy, Kayla Michelle Wyrick of Mount Airy, Nathan Lee Tillotson of Fort Bragg, Julie Dayringer Stewart and her husband, Chris, of Turkey, Kevin Preston Wyrick and his wife, Aleicia, of Mount Airy, Travis Conrad Tillotson of Galax, VA, and Dustin Lee Bowman of Hillsville, VA; three wonderful great-grandchildren, Lynzie Reece Thomas, William Franklin Thomas, and Liam Preston Wyrick, all of Mount Airy; and a sister, Louise Wyrick Forbis of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Wyrick was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary Madeline Reece Wyrick; several sisters; and several brothers. The funeral service will be held Friday, August 1, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Midway Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Phillips and the Rev. Steve McCreary officiating. Entombment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum, with military honors conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service.
