James Cleveland Atkins

Mr. James Cleveland “Jay” Atkins, 86, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday afternoon, May 8, 2017, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Atkins was born October 23, 1930, in Henry County, VA, the son of the late Marlin Edgar and Annie Hardy Lemons Atkins. Jay served our country in the United States Air Force and retired from Renfro Corporation after many years of service. He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. He is survived by two daughters, Tammy Hiatt of Mount Airy and Denise Atkins (Linda Shutt) of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Sasha Wilson (Brandon Senter), Jared Hiatt, and Stephanie Hiatt; a great-granddaughter, Madison Wilson; a brother and sister-in-law, Ed and April Atkins of Mount Airy; a niece, Mary Ann Freeman and her husband, Mitchell, of Mount Airy; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Wilford and Erlene Marshall, Glen and Opal Marshall, and Roy and Melody Marshall, all of Ararat, VA, Alvin and Frankie Edwards of Kernersville, and Freida Hall of Newport Beach, CA; and a special friend, Larry Wilson of Monroe. In addition to his parents, Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Marshall Atkins; a grandson, Jonathan William Wilson; a sister, Mary Magdalene Atkins; and two nephews, Donald Ray Haymore and William Mark Atkins. The funeral service will be held Thursday, May 11, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Zane Fishel and Robert B. Holder officiating. Entombment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. At other times, the family welcomes friends to the home of Tammy Hiatt.
