James Aubrey Atkins

Mr. James Aubrey Atkins, 90, of King, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Atkins was born February 2, 1922, in Surry County, to the late Elzevan and Bertie Dollyhigh Atkins. He was a veteran of World War II and retired from McLean Trucking Company. Aubrey attended Pine Hill Friends Meeting and was a member of Copeland Masonic Lodge #390 AF and AM, Salem Masonic Lodge #289 AF and AM, Winston-Salem Scottish Rites, and Forsyth Shrine Club. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Wayne Johnson of Rural Hall; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Dawn Atkins of Advance and Bobby and Kay Atkins of King; a stepdaughter and her husband, Jenny and James Jessup of Johnson City, TN; seven grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Sally Key of Lexington; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Garnett and Lou Ray Atkins of King and Roger and Norma Atkins of Rural Hall; and several special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by his first wife, Carrie Lee Simpson Atkins; his second wife, Vernis Wall Reid Atkins; a daughter, Joyce Callis; a stepdaughter, Kay Fulkerson; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; two sisters, Opal Atkins and Hattie Lou Davis; and two brothers, Elbert Atkins and Herbert Atkins. The funeral service will be held Monday, March 19, 2012, at 11:00 AM at New Home Church of Christ, 186 New Home Church Road in Dobson, with Brother Tim Smith, the Rev. Lee Johnson, and the Rev. Roy Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in the New Home Church of Christ Cemetery, with full military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Sunday, March 18, 2012, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
