Mr. James David Atkins, 60, of Ararat, passed away Monday, June 21, 2010, at Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born November 30, 1949, in Surry County, to the late Otis William Henry and Edith Marie Jones Atkins. Mr. Atkins retired from Dobson Trucking Company and was a member of Blessed Hope Baptist Church. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 5 years, Shirley Goad Atkins of the home; two daughters, Veronica "Daddy's Girl" Atkins and fiancé, T.J. Swartz, and Billie Ann Atkins, all of Mount Airy; a step-daughter, Stephanie and husband Richard Ables of Mount Airy; two step-sons, Ronnie Hazelwood of Ararat and Rodney and wife Debbie Hazelwood of Siloam; two grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Edie and "Red" Gammons of Blackwater; and four brothers, Robert and wife Judy Atkins and Warren and wife Rita Atkins, all of Blackwater, Danny Wayne Atkins of Level Cross, and Gurney and wife Rhonda Atkins of Dobson. The funeral service will be held Thursday, June 24, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Blackwater Community Church, with the Rev. Ted Crotts and Brother Nolen Bentley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 23, 2010, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Blackwater Community Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the James Atkins Funeral Fund, c/o Moody-Davis Funeral Home, P.O. Box 295, Dobson, NC 27017 to assist the family with the funeral expenses.
