James Donald Binkley

James Donald Binkley (Jim), age 88, of Dobson, North Carolina, passed away at his home on January 22, 2022. Born in Forsyth County on May 5, 1933, to the late George Dewey Binkley, Sr., and the late Matilda “Mattie” White Henning Binkley, he was known from childhood as “Jimmy.”

As an adult, he came to know Jesus Christ as his Savior through the efforts of his parents. He retired from AT&T as a systems analyst with more than 40 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served as a Corpsman stationed in Bainbridge, Maryland, during the Korean War era. Jim was a founding member of Fair Oaks Gospel Chapel in Winston-Salem, where he served as a Trustee, Elder, Deacon, and in many other capacities, and was later an active member of Double Creek Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Velma Coe Binkley, four brothers (Tom, Eldon, Thurman, and George) and one sister (Dixie) and their spouses, and son-in-law Jay Harrison. He is survived by his second wife, Julia West Moser; and his and Velma’s children, Mike Binkley (and wife Trish); daughter, Carolyn Binkley Harrison; four granddaughters, Kayla and Kristen Binkley, and Haley and Layne Harrison.

Jim will be remembered for his ability to take on any challenge; but his most important legacy was teaching his family about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jim will be laid to rest beside his wife Velma at Double Creek Church of Christ with full military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will hold a private viewing of Jim Thursday morning, January 27, 2022. Family and friends are welcome to attend a graveside service at 2:00 PM in the Double Creek Church of Christ Cemetery,674 Double Creek Road, Dobson NC 27017. The family would like to express their gratitude to Mountain Valley Hospice for their kindnesses and caring, especially CNA Mike, Nurse Shelley, and Social Worker Courtney.
