Mr. James Chancy "J.C." Fields, 76, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, at his home. He was born December 21, 1932, in Grayson County, VA, to the late Elder Chancy Byron and Eva Hodges Fields. Mr. Fields served our country in the United States Army from July 1950 until July 1952, serving as corporal during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the VFW Honor Guard Post #2019 and was a past post commander. He retired from Kerns Bakery after 30 years of service and was of the Baptist faith. After retirement, Mr. Fields thoroughly enjoyed portraying the character of "Goober" and drove the Mayberry Squad Car for tours through Mount Airy. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and was loved by everyone who knew him. Mr. Fields is survived by his wife, Shirley Niketas Fields; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mickey Fields, Byron "Bodey" and Vicki Fields, and Sheri Fields, all of Mount AiryC; grandchildren, Hallie Fields, Madison Fields, and Brayton Fields; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Jack Bartlett of Salem, VA; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Carolyn Fields of Columbia, SC, and Samuel and Rosa Mae Fields of Hillsville, VA. In addition to his parents, Mr. Fields was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Renita Carol Fields. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, June 28, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, by the Rev. Roger Sickmiller and Thurmond Midkiff. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with full military rites conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
