James Walter Gilley "J.W."

Mr. James Walter Gilley “Cow Papa”, age 75, of Pilot Mountain, passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem. He was born on October 30, 1948 in Surry County to the late John Cecil Gilley and Alice Throckmorton Gilley Harrison. Mr. Gilley worked at Gilley’s Automotive for more than 30 years and was also a bus driver for PART Transportation. He was an avid farmer and loved his cows. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will surely be missed by all who knew him. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 51 years, Carolyn Thomas Gilley; daughter, Holly Hooker (Mark); sons, James Gilley II (Shasta), Anthony Gilley (Sandy); grandchildren, Ellie Hooker, Jordan Bailey, Tripp Gilley, Jadee Gilley, Haley Reece (Noah), Ashley Gilley; great-grandchild, Scarlette Bailey; sisters, Doris Hawks, Rachel Collins (Stephen); brother, Junior Gilley; special friend, Dale Jessup. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, July 28, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Mt. Bethel Moravian Church Cemetery, 127 Mt. Bethel Road, Cana, VA 24317 with service conducted by Rev. James Gilley II. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in honor of Mr. Gilley to CrossTraining Ministry of Pilot Mountain 285 Taylor Rd., Pilot Mountain, NC 27041.
