Mr. James Edwin “Coach” Holleman, Sr., 89, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2022, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born March 10, 1933, in Davidson County, the son of the late Leonard and Nora Holcomb Holleman. Coach Holleman had a long career in coaching. He started his career at Wampee Little River High School and continued at Mount Airy High School, Elkin High School, Wingate Junior College, Hibriten High School, and Patrick County High School. After his tenure at Patrick County High School, he returned to Mount Airy and coached at Mount Airy Middle School until his retirement. He touched the lives of his students on the court and field, as well as in the classroom. Coach worked at Cross Creek Country Club until his retirement in early 2022, and he was a veteran of the United States Army. Coach Holleman was inducted into the Mount Airy Sports Hall of Fame and the Surry County Sports Hall of Fame and was an avid University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill fan. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Wanda Neal Holleman; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James E. “Jimmy” Holleman, Jr. and Mickey and Jennifer Holleman; two grandchildren, Justin Holleman and his wife, Taylor, and Sarah Holleman; two great-grandchildren, Oliver Holleman and Jaxson Holleman; a brother, Douglas Wayne Holleman; and many, special friends and students. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Eloise Holleman; and two grandchildren, Charles Anthony Holleman and Megan Nicole Holleman. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Dr. Jon Cawley and Frank Sheppard officiating. Interment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Airy Youth Foundation, P.O. Box 6353, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
