James Alva Hunter

Mr. James Alva Hunter, 84, of Mt. Airy passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at his sons home surrounded by his loving family.  Mr. Hunter was born in Surry County on April 2, 1938, to the late Lester and Annie Mae Mills Hunter.  He retired from Century Link after many years of employment.  Mr. Hunter proudly served our country in the United States Air Force.  He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Kent Iroler; sons and daughter-in-law, James “Michael” Hunter, Phillip Matthew and Nicole Hunter; eleven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Gary Schatz; a sister-in-law, Faye Hunter; a special friend, Elizabeth Lawson; many nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Brown; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Harold Noah; a brother, Carl Mitchell Hunter.  A graveside service will be held Sunday, January 29, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Oakdale Cemetery with Dr. Jon Cawley Officiating, and military honors conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mt. Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain.  The family will receive friends Sunday from 12:30 until 1:30 PM at Moody Funeral Services in Mt.
