Mr. James Donald "Jim" Laster, 70, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, after being in declining health for some time. He was born July 15, 1942, in Surry County, to the late Quillar and Thelma Swift Laster. Jim retired from R.J. Reynolds and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Among his many interests were bluegrass festivals, guitar picking sessions, golf, yard work, visits with friends, and most of all spending time with his grandsons. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Glenda Stanley Laster of the home; a daughter, Jamie L. Smith of Mount Airy; two grandsons, Stephen Smith and Neil Smith, both of Mount Airy; and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Laster was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Laster; and several friends. The funeral service will be held Friday, December 14, 2012, at 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family wishes to thank Dr. Barry Seltzer, Dr. Patricia Zekon, Dr. Daniel Murphy, and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice for their care of Jim.
